GROCERY FEASIBILITY STUDY

The Savannah Development and Renewal Authority is undertaking a study to

determine the feasibility of locating a commercial development, such as a grocery, and other concentrated uses on a specific site within the MLK-Montgomery Street Urban Redevelopment Area and/or along the MLK/Montgomery Corridor. The information from the study will also provide an accurate assessment of the potential success of such a development for downtown Savannah, Georgia.

SDRA has selected a team of consultants from the College of Business Administration at Savannah State University to do the study.  The work is underway and should be completed in the next few months.

PRELIMINARY LAND-USE STRATEGIES FOR MARTIN LUTHER KING, Jr. BOULEVARD & MONTGOMERY STREET CORRIDOR URBAN REDEVELOPMENT AREA SOUTH OF JONES STREET TO 52nd STREET

SDRA in conjunction with the City Bureau for Public Development, the Metropolitan Planning Commission and our consulting team of Duncan Assoc. and Sottile and Sottile are finalizing land-use strategies for the MLK-Montgomery Urban Redevelopment Area, Jones to 52nd Street, based on public input received to date. Another opportunity for public input will occur before the land-use plan goes to MPC and to Council for final approval. Additional public meetings will also be held to discuss establishment of design standards for the redevelopment area.

Drop-in sessions were held in July to discuss the preliminary land-use strategies and opportunities for development and improvement of the Martin Luther King, Jr. Blvd. and Montgomery Street Redevelopment Area (located between Jones to 52nd Street).

Two public workshops were held in December 2003 to re-affirm the community's vision and goals for redevelopment as set forth in the Urban Redevelopment Plan adopted by Mayor and Council in December 2002. On February 12, 2004, a Public Meeting was held to present strategies that will enable the City to ensure that the historic and neighborhood/commercial fabric of the Redevelopment Area is protected and enhanced and that potential for revitalization and redevelopment is maximized for existing and new property and business owners and residents. This meeting was aired on the City of Savannah's Government Channel for the month of March.
