SDRA, in partnership with the City of Savannah and the Metropolitan Planning Commission (MPC), is guiding the development of a master plan for Downtown Savannah.
Grounded in the community-defined vision and guiding principles, the strategies and recommendations included in the Master Plan are intended to guide future development of downtown and aim to diversify economic opportunity, create vibrant, affordable neighborhoods, ensure a strong quality of life, maximize mobility options and retain fundamental elements of the Oglethorpe Plan.
Through public meetings and numerous community and neighborhood workshops and presentations, along with online surveys, and one on one meetings, hundreds of residents, business leaders and representatives from civic and neighborhood associations have been engaged.
In 2008, the Master Plan Steering Committee as well as a Technical and Stakeholder committee comprised of SDRA, City and MPC staff as well as business and property owners and residents reviewed the plan draft. Currently, final edits are underway.
It is anticipated that the document will be presented for input to the Mayor and Aldermen and MPC, prior to final presentation to the public in mid-2009.
Strategies Already in Motion
With the public interest and support of this plan, a number of the key plan strategies are already being developed by the City, Mobility Management Board, SDRA or MPC. This includes commencement of the Pedestrian Wayfinding and Directional Signage Initiative, traffic improvements along Bay Street, streetscape improvement planning for Broughton Street, the inclusion of interactive uses in the first floors of large-scale development projects, adjustments to the site plan review process, review and revisions to the Historic District ordinance including large-scale development standards and requirements, introduction of the free DOT shuttle system and commencement of a comprehensive parking study.
